The term statistical learning methods generally refers to a class of methods, which – while technically representing an instance of machine learning – have long been known in the area of statistics: even before many of the more complex machine learning methods were discovered.
The area of statistical learning includes methods such as linear regression, polynomial regression and logistic regression (actually a classification method).
